How EssingtonITS Delivered Digital Learning Without the Internet
In a world where digital transformation is reshaping education, there are still corners of the globe and sectors of industry where internet access is either unavailable or intentionally restricted. The Problem: Learning in the Dark
There are two very different yet equally complex scenarios where internet-based learning simply isn't an option:
Remote Locations
Vast areas of the world rural villages, disaster zones, field clinics lack the infrastructure for internet access. Here, education remains a lifeline, often the only path toward progress and opportunity.
High-Security Environments
In sensitive industries or government facilities, security policies restrict or entirely eliminate internet access. Intellectual property, confidential data, or classified operations must remain sealed from the outside world.
Yet in both cases, the need for digital learning is critical. Onboarding staff, teaching technical processes, or delivering basic literacy and IT skills these are foundational to progress.
The Vision: Portable, Powerful, and Plug-and-Play
EssingtonITS was tasked with an ambitious goal: build a mobile, low-power, secure device capable of delivering a full Moodle-based eLearning platform known as eLMS without relying on the internet.
The brief: “A plug-and-play eLearning system, usable by non-technical staff, in environments with zero internet and zero local IT support.”
The Solution: A Self-Contained Learning System
Our engineers selected the MeLE Quieter Mini PC, a compact, fanless device equipped with a powerful Intel processor, 16GB RAM, and a lightning-fast NVMe SSD. Its small footprint and robust performance made it the perfect backbone for this ambitious deployment.
On top of a minimal Ubuntu install, the team deployed GLServer, our in-house automation platform that configures and secures:
- Moodle (eLMS) – A full learning management system.
- MariaDB – Robust database support.
- Redis – Session handling for performance.
- ClamAV – Built-in virus protection.
- Log rotation and self-maintenance routines – To ensure stability without IT oversight.
Every component is optimised for low power consumption, maximum performance, and minimal attack surface. The entire system is hardened and locked down, requiring no maintenance or setup beyond plugging it in.
How It Works
Once powered and connected to any DHCP-enabled network, the device broadcasts a local URL. Any laptop, tablet, or PC on the same network can instantly access the eLearning portal.
No cloud, no cables, no configuration. Just instant digital learning, ready out of the box.
Whether it’s teaching coding to students in rural Africa, or onboarding engineers inside a secure facility, this solution makes learning available anywhere, regardless of internet access.
Security Meets Simplicity
Because the solution never touches the internet, there are no open ports, no phone-home services, and no external dependencies. Backups are local. Updates are internal. The result is an air-gapped fortress of knowledge.
And should the LAN change or the network restart, the device automatically reconfigures itself always ready to serve.
