What is an Identity Management System (IdMS)?

An Identity Management System (IdMS) is a framework or software that manages user identities and controls access to resources within an organisation or network. It authenticates users, authorises access to systems or data, and ensures secure, seamless login experiences.

Shibboleth, for example, is an open-source IdMS that supports single sign-on (SSO) for federated identity management, allowing users to access multiple systems with one set of credentials, commonly used in academic and research institutions.
